After 15 years since its original run, Ajith Kumar’s 2011 blockbuster Mankatha has made a spectacular return to theatres, setting records at the box office on its re-release opening day.
The action thriller, directed by Venkat Prabhu and produced by Sun Pictures, grossed ₹4.45 crore in Tamil Nadu on Day 1 of its re-release. The highest opening day figure ever for a re-released Tamil film in the state. This milestone sees Mankatha surpassing Thalapathy Vijay’s Ghilli, which previously held the record with ₹4.30 crore on its re-release opening.
The film’s strong performance comes despite having fewer shows than Ghilli did during its re-release, underscoring ongoing enthusiasm from audiences for Ajith’s charismatic anti-hero Vinayak Mahadev. Across India, Mankatha have collected ₹4.75 crore gross on Day 1.
Originally released in 2011 as Ajith’s 50th film, Mankatha was both a critical and commercial hit and went on to become one of the most defining entries in the star’s career. Its nostalgic re entry into cinemas not only raked in strong box office numbers but also reinforced its cult status among Tamil audiences.
With the weekend ahead, Mankatha is poised for a strong run driving collections further. If the trend continues, the film could rewrite several re-release records in the days ahead.
